Welcome, Delicious friend.

Echo Bazaar: Fallen London is a text based game, available through Twitter or Facebook. You play as a character who finds themselves in Fallen London, an underground, post-apocalyptic, steampunk version of London. You navigate the city through a series of storylets, and you bump up various stats based off your encounters. The writing is profoundly clever, featuring a wicked sense of humor. Storylets can be horrifying or hilarious, or sometimes both. I have tried to select music which echoes this tone.

So welcome. Prop up your feet and help yourself to a glass of mushroom wine. Once you enter Fallen London, you’ll find it very hard to leave.

At the beginning of the storyline, you find yourself in prison. How did you end up there? What crime did you commit to earn such a sentence? Well, one can speculate…

The Clockwork Quartet - The Watchmaker's Apprentice
That Mr McArthur's looked all over town, but he won't find me now for I'm off coastward bound.
And I'm trading the smog for some fresh salt sea air and he'll never catch on that I'm there.
I was once his apprentice, in the clock-making trade, and the miser made me work for every penny of my wage.
Til he found he could replace me with a clockwork machine, and he threw me right out on the street.
I'm not the type who would grovel and pray that he deign to recant and permit to stay,
So I cursed him and left and I solemnly swore that he'd pay.
I rigged up a watch to do more than just chime, and I didn't balk once at the depth of my crime -
A most perfect invention that still kept immaculate time.

Your escape from prison is arranged and assisted by a mysterious benefactor, connecting you to The Great Game. Why did they set you free? And what is this game? Well, it’s up to you to find out.

Jem -- They
Do you see what I see?
Why do we live like this?
Is it because it's true that ignorance is bliss?
And who are they?
And where are they?
And how can they know all this?

Afterwards, you enter the town itself, and begin your life there.

(Songs for the town of Fallen London)

Rasputina – In Old Yellowcake
Smoke rises from the ice factory on the edge, on the edge of a city that exists in perpetual gloom.
I snatch a note from the basket of a passing bicycle - It says, "Go to the flour factory. There's something waiting there for you."
Under the window, covered by curtains, all lacy and splattered with blood,
We find crutches in the corner and bullets on the shelves, which I dismiss at once as being equivalent, irrelevant, in and of themselves.
Underneath a staircase is a mast which flies a flag. Despite dankness beyond imagining, it floats on to a higher hole.
In tunnels gouged beneath the basement rooms are, unmistakably, sets of bloody handprints on a crumbling wall.
Oh won't you be there with me for it, tonight? In this hut-to-hut witch hunt, down the tunnels of Old Yellowcake,
When all the souls in a city go drowning by starlight, where each choice you make is a fierce firefight or a new mistake?

Tom Waits -- Underground
There's a big dark town, it's a place I've found
There's a world going on underground
They're alive, they're awake while the rest of the world is asleep
Below the mine shaft roads, it will all unfold

Tom Waits – Little Drop of Poison
I like my town with a little drop of poison
Nobody knows they're lining up to go insane
I'm all alone, I smoke my friends down to the filter
But I feel much cleaner after it rains
A rat always knows when he's in with weasels
Here you lose a little every day
I remember when a million was a million
They all have ways to make you pay

Fallen London is full of whispers and secrets. It’s your job, as a player, to accumulate and find out these delightful little tidbits. They act as currency, and also serve to further your storyline.

The Pierces – Secret
Got a secret, can you keep it? Swear this one you'll save
Better lock it, in your pocket, taking this one to the grave
If I show you then I know you won't tell what I said
Cause two can keep a secret if one of them is dead…
Why do you smile like you have told a secret?
Now you're telling lies ‘cause you're the one to keep it
But no one keeps a secret, no one keeps a secret
Why when we do our darkest deeds do we tell?
They burn in our brains become a living hell
‘Cause everyone tells, everyone tells…

(Love in Fallen London)
There are, of course, numerous opportunities for you to form bonds with your fellow citizens. Be forewarned; there is no guarantee these relationships will be stable or long lasting.

The Real Thursday Weld – I loved London
When I woke up, and I felt down, I'd light up and I'd walk into town
'Cause I loved London when I was in love with you
And the crack dealers and the grazing whores
Couldn't touch me then, when baby, I was yours
And I loved London when I was in love with you

Tom Lehrer – I Hold Your Hand
I hold your hand in mine, dear, I press it to my lips.
I take a healthy bite from your dainty fingertips.
The night you died I cut it off. I really don't know why.
For now each time I kiss it I get bloodstains on my tie.
I'm sorry now I killed you, for our love was something fine,
And till they come to get me I shall hold your hand in mine.

Kim Boekbinder – The Organ Donor’s March
One fine day someone came and took your life away.
That's the day you gave your heart to me.
It was a long operation, filled with complications,
Now we're together, just like lovers, we are one.
I have your heart, it beats inside, it’s only three inches wide.
I have your heart, I have your heart, I have your heart.
We're sewn together just you and me, so let's begin oh finally,
I'll take you out for walks, we'll always be together.
We're sewn together oh through and through
So now I'm living my life for two, I feel the pressure to be good enough for you.

In Fallen London, death is only temporary, at best. This tends to cause some complications among interpersonal relationships.

The Puppini Sisters – Wuthering Heights
Heathcliff, don't you know that it's me, it's Cathy, I've come home.
I'm so cold, let me in-a-your window.
Ooh, it gets dark! It gets lonely, on the other side from you.
I pine a lot. I find the lot falls through without you.
I'm coming back, love, cruel Heathcliff, my one dream,
My only master.
Too long I roamed in the night. I'm coming back to his side, to put it right.
Leave behind my wuthering, wuthering, Wuthering Heights,

(People of Fallen London)
This also causes much frustration to Jack of Smiles, Fallen London’s most prolific serial killer. It’s so hard to have your work appreciated when it rises again mere hours later.

Stephen Sondheim – Sweeney Todd, Opening Title

Another person of power is the mysterious Duchess. There exists much animosity among the people towards her, but well, anyone who voices such opinions will find themselves severely… reprimanded.

Mozart – Symphony No. 25 in G Minor

And how could I forget the agents of Hell, who are at work among the populace? Just what is the Devil up to, and why do lower level players keep getting sent after him?

John Williams – Devil’s Dance

If politics aren’t to your taste, no matter. You can always spend your time among the Bohemians, or other patrons of art, at the Singing Mandrake. Their personal dramas may prove to be surprisingly illuminating, and their attractive young things a welcome distraction.

The Real Thursday Weld – Ruth, Roses, and Revolvers
Let’s make a film, it’ll be such fun. All you need is a girl and a gun, apparently
We’ll pump it full of art and sex. It’ll make a sure-fire success of you and me.
And if I crumble in the face of lust, the porn, pain and prescription drugs will get me through
So don’t tell me I’m not thinking straight. I’m looking rough but I’m feeling great, I promise you
There’s no turning back, Ruth

Or, if you prefer dirty work, there is always rat catching. They sell for good money, and you may chance upon some whispered secrets down below the streets.

Bruno Coulais – The Famous Mister B

Your quick skills will also prove useful if you decide to catch cats instead. Yes, it might sound frivolous, but cats carry secrets through Fallen London, and an odd intelligence glimmers in their eyes as they melt into the shadows…

Psapp – Everybody wants to be a cat (cover)
Everybody wants to be a cat, because a cat's the only cat who knows where it's at.
Everybody's pickin' up on that feline beat, 'cause everything else is obsolete.
I've heard some corny birds who tried to sing, but a cat's the only cat who knows how to swing.

(Dreams and Nightmares)
Dreams play a most unusual role in Fallen London; your experiences of the waking world are only half of your life. Through Prisoner’s Honey, one can have vivid dreams, of heart stopping beauty or gut-clenching terror.

Iain Ballamy – Dream Park/Meeting in a Dream

Bruno Coulais – Mechanical Lullaby

A word on the nightmares: Occasionally, they may seem amusing – spotting solemn clowns in a city square – Or harmless, even – when you dream of running through a maze of statues, only to wake in your bed. And yet, they begin to bleed over into the waking world, into the things you spot out of the corner of your eye…

Morpheus – Vigiliae (3:14 A.M.)
Bring out your dead.
Do not go gentle into that good night. […] Rage, rage against the dying of the light […]
This is no place to be, this cold morning. Yet another night of burning cigarettes and swollen eyes, shaping a ghost’s faded by the lights of dawn.
Performing random acts of senseless beauty for the sake of something I don’t understand […]
And if my dreams should break against the will of the world, could you, my secret reflection, be held guilty for my madness?
Speak to me now, speak to me now, in this sad tongue. Speak to me now.

Artie Shaw & His New Music – Nightmare

There is only so much you can take. When you encounter too many nightmares for your fragile mind to handle, it snaps. The end result is a period of delirium, during which you completely lose your grasp of reality.

Jack Purvis – Mental Strain at Dawn

However, I wouldn’t let this deter you! You’ll recover and manage to claw your way back to reality. When you arrive once more, well, Fallen London will still be there for you to explore and experience. So what are you waiting for? Go out there, and begin your story.

Horace Heidt & His Musical Knights – Dawn of a New Day
It’s the dawn of a new day!
Here we come, young and old, come to watch the wonders unfold.
Listen one, listen all, there can be no resisting the call, come hail the dawn of a new day!

I'm looking forward to this, so much. I don't recognize the fandom, but the song list looks awesome. Good job on making the title so intriguing. I usually move past mixes for fandoms I don't recognize but had to stop for this one.

I may have to make a Facebook just to play, it looks like just my type of game.

Thanks for sharing! ♥

Thank you so much for this comment! I know it's a bit of an obscure fandom, so it makes me happy to know someone checked this out without being familiar with it. :)

I hope you enjoy the mix, and if you start playing, I hope you enjoy your visit to Fallen London. ;)

I LOVE Echo Bazaar, I stopped playing for a while because of college applications and getting ready for college, but I'm addicted once more. Even considered making a fanmix a while back, but never got past two songs ...

Could you please reupload this mix? It looks utterly fantastic and I'd love to give it a listen!

Yeah, actually, I've been meaning to get back to it! Apparently they've added/changed a bunch of stuff lately.

And sure thing! It's such a pain to reup everything so I keep putting it off. Anyway, it's up again here (! Hope it lives up to your expectations, haha.

Sweet! Thank you so much!

Yeah, I didn't play for months, almost a year I think, and I've just gotten back into it! They've changed a lot, there's new stats and lots of new options and storylines, and changing goods and items into other goods and items is much easier.
Also you can live everywhere now, for some reason. And cards will give you options to do stuff at your many Lodgings so long as you have a key to each.
It's as addictive as ever but very very good. Knife and Candle is still not operational, they're working on fixing it apparently. I never played that, though, so I don't miss it, but I'm curious about them bringing it back.
And they're subtly encouraging people to bring in friends via Facebook or Twitter. I've run into a couple cards that are specifically for interacting with your friends like that.

And they just keep adding new things! I'm excited. It's a fun game with cool storylines and options, and also free. I'm tempted to buy some Fate to play some of the special storylines, but you can still have a lot of fun without paying, which is good because that's how it should be. When they tried limiting people's actions for the day I got really mad, thankfully they're not doing that, just the standard "start with ten, one recharges every seven minutes" ...
